Weekly Wrap Up – Round 6
Summary
It was a competitive weekend, with several sides involved in hard-fought contests across the round. Both the Men’s Premier Division and U19.5s pushed St George in closely contested matches, with the U19.5s narrowly missing out in one of the games of the weekend. MD6 continued its strong form with a solid win over Manly, while the remaining sides battled hard against quality opposition in North Shore and Sydney Uni. Despite mixed results, there were plenty of positive efforts and valuable lessons to take from the round as the club continues to build throughout the season.
Below is a full breakdown of each team’s performance, including coaches’ comments, best-on-ground players, and goalkickers.
Men’s Premier Division
Result:
St George 11.10 – 76 to East Coast 8.11 – 59
From The Coach:
MPD travelled out to Kelso Park to face St George, another winless side where we went in with confidence and belief that we could get the job done. Unfortunately, we came up short as we were never able to peg back the 3-goal head-start we gave them early on. We get back to work, enjoy the week-off with rep-round and get ready to face UTS for the second time this season.

Women’s Division 1
Result:
Sydney Uni 8.14 – 62 to East Coast 0.2 – 2
From The Coach:
The Div 1 girls took on Sydney Uni at Uni oval Saturday morning with an attitude that was eager to learn and excited to play with one another. From the get go, they didn’t make anything easy for the Uni team that gave last year’s premiers their first loss of the season. Despite having limited bench due to unavailability and illness, the girls had the intensity turned up to 110 and never let the score get the better of them. With the support of Phoenix players who were absolutely unreal with their skill and energy during the whole game, I believe the team prevailed in their tackle and kicking pressure, taking great marks and moving the ball well. when uni did score, it really took their absolute best, which is a huge testament to our squad that’s still learning some of the game. My proudest moment was seeing everyone play for each other, play with a smile on their face and go home being proud of how they went. Nothing beats leaving a game knowing your squad are improving, learning a lot and most importantly having fun.

Men’s Division 2
Result:
North Shore 14.14 – 98 to East Coast 4.4 – 28
From The Coach:
A tough afternoon for us this week against a side that was able to play consistent team football across the four quarters. While the final result was disappointing, there were still periods throughout the game where we showed the effort, pressure and teamwork we know we are capable of. The second quarter was easily our best period of the game, with the group working hard, competing strongly and taking the contest right up to the opposition. We were able to match them around the ball, apply pressure and play with much better connection as a team, which was reflected on the scoreboard at half time. Full credit to the opposition, who were able to capitalise late in the game. The final quarter blowout was disappointing, but there were still positive signs throughout the match when we stayed disciplined, worked for each other and stuck to our structures. The challenge for us now is to produce that level of effort and teamwork for longer periods across the game. Last week’s win showed what this group is capable of when we play connected football and work for each other, and the focus now turns to bringing that same mindset and consistency into next week.

Men’s Division 6
Result:
East Coast 7.15 – 57 to Manly 3.7 – 25
From The Coach:
East Coast Eagles Men’s Div 6 defensive effort was at the heart of a hard-fought 57–25 win over the Manly Wolves. The squad controlled large periods of the contest through excellent work from the mids and another disciplined performance from the back six, continuing the team’s recent improvement around contested footy and transition from defence. Our back six were outstanding again and the mids gave us first use for most of the day. The pressure and work rate around the ball were strong. While we were pleased with the result, we realise inaccuracy in front of goal stays an area requiring attention after we kicked 15 behinds, following 20 behinds the last week. We are creating opportunities and getting the ball into dangerous areas, which is encouraging, but we are making life harder for ourselves than we need to. To the squad’s credit, even when we were not converting in front of goal, they stayed composed and kept defending the right way. We will look to focus training on finishing in front of goals in the coming weeks while building on the strong defensive patterns that has seen us with two wins in two weeks. Next week we take on Southern Power at Loftus.
