Em Goodsir makes a Giant statement in her AFLW Debut

This past weekend the East Coast Eagles family watched on as our golden girl Em Goodsir became the second EAGAL to make her AFLW debut in as many weeks.

Em wore #1 for GWS on Sunday afternoon, as the Giants closed out a tight win against Adelaide at Richmond Oval, West Adelaide – 4.2.26 to 3.3.21.

Adding to the excitement of the afternoon, the victory ensured GWS held second spot in Conference A, needing just one win from their remaining two games to secure a maiden finals berth.

Goodsir was fantastic on debut racking up 12 disposals and 6 crunching tackles, emerging on the scene as a tackling beast, showing the AFLW what the Eagles became used to seeing from Em in the blue and gold jumper.

After playing Em, there would have been plenty of Crows with sore bodies. That’s for sure!

Em was taken at Pick #76 by the Giants in last year’s AFLW Draft after just three years playing AFL, and her footy career went from strength to strength at the East Coast Eagles in that time.

After joining the EAGALS in the women’s programs first season of 2017, playing nine games and winning Players’ Player, Em really began to hit her strides and dominate the competition in the following two seasons.

In 2018, Em was awarded the James Medal winning best and fairest for the Sydney AFL Women’s Division One Competition, and was the runaway winner of the EAGALS best and fairest.

The following 2019 season saw the EAGALS jump to Premier Division, but this was no match for Em, as she continued to crush her opponents and the accolades followed.

In 2019 she was named at Centre in the Sydney AFL Women’s Premier Division Team of the Year and finished runner-up in the Mostyn Medal race (league best and fairest), only being outdone by Macquarie Univeristy’s and former GWS Giants AFLW captain Amanda Farrugia.

In just three short seasons, Em certainly built quite the fearsome résumé at East Coast.

Em has described her time with the Giants as a “roller coaster” admitting that it has been tough at times but a very rewarding experience, and had more to say on her debut………

“I didn’t have time to think, I got told I was playing 30 mins before the game, so I just had to quickly prep and get ready. I was pretty nervous but after the game was the best feeling. It was the best day of my life. I just wish I could of had my family and friends there, it was weird without a crowd”

Em is and always will be a very popular figure at the Eagles, with plenty of her EAGAL teammates watching on, following her with every moment.

Eagles Club President David Arndt said her Em’s achievement – “From the moment Em laced up the boots and began playing this great game at our great club, we knew she was something special. We are all so proud of her after her fantastic debut on the weekend. We know big things lie ahead for her AFLW career, as she continues to make her name.”
